TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Massage therapist and teacher Marybetts Sinclair is filled with excitement about her new book, Modern Hydrotherapy for the Massage Therapist, and she is eager to share what she learned in the writing of it. “Research for the book,” she explained, “took me all over the country to observe hydrotherapy treatments in schools, hospitals and clinics, and to interview health care professionals who use water treatments for healing. As a result of what I learned from my research and from using what I had learned for myself and for my clients, one entire chapter of my book became devoted to hydrotherapy treatments for self-care. It contains a special section on self-care treatments for massage therapists, including hydrotherapy treatments, range of motion and stretching exercises designed to prevent repetitive strain injury.” It is the desire to share what she has learned and compiled that has led her to create a new class, Self-Care for the Upper Extremities, which OSM will offer this summer.

This class is specifically for bodyworkers who use their upper extremities intensively every day and may not do any regular self-care. Marybetts is quick to point out that massage is not done with just the upper extremities, rather proper body mechanics involve moving from the center of the body. However, because practicing massage may cause aches and pains to rest in the shoulder, arms, and hands, those areas became the focus of this Self Care class. Many students learn parts of this material throughout their training but don’t always apply that knowledge to their own bodies. Often the LMT is not fully aware of how important self-care is until he or she has been working for a while.

What makes this class unique is the perspective of a long-time practitioner who wants to help massage therapists maintain their longevity as well. Specific strategies to avoid injury, as well as methods for incorporating self-care into a massage practice, can give LMTs a plan to stay injury-free. They include not only specific hydrotherapy treatments such as salt glows, paraffin dips and castor oil packs for the LMT’s muscles and joints, but also exercises to keep muscles strong and flexible and joints mobile in those hardworking hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders. This class will practice the exercises and hydrotherapy treatments, as well as discuss work habits that can prevent injury.

OSM is excited to offer this new class to LMTs and students. It is important to us that bodyworkers stay healthy as they offer healthy treatments to the public.

APPLIED POLARITY PRACTITIONER (APP) TRAINING

Polarity Therapy is a holistic health system that involves learning and utilizing energy-based bodywork, basic nutritional concepts, energy exercises (also called Polarity yoga) and process work to enhance self-awareness. As in most energy-based systems, health is viewed as a reflection of the condition of our “energy field”, electromagnetic patterns that manifest in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual experience. Polarity Therapy classes at OSM will now allow students to complete the first level of training recognized by the American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA). APTA sanctions two levels of training and the Associate Polarity Practitioner (APP) is the preliminary level, based on a minimum level of excellence in this field.

Most OSM Polarity classes are open to all students, but a few do have prerequisites. Required and recommended books will be available in the OSM bookstore beginning June 2007.

The instructor for these classes is Kate Bromley MA, RPE, LMP #WA 4831. She is a Registered Polarity Educator (RPE) who has been teaching Polarity classes for 9 years. Kate trained with Health Training Group in B.C. Canada, and completed her teacher training in the Toronto/Quebec area. She has been practicing massage in the state of Washington for 17 years and teaches clinical massage skills, Polarity therapy, aromatherapy and spa clinic in the Seattle area. Comments from previous OSM students include “huge compassionate heart, broad knowledge and willingness to share it”, “very informative, supporting and inspiring”, “challenges me to stretch myself”.

Besides her passion for teaching, Kate continues to study nutritional therapy, Zero Balancing and the use of aromatic oils. She maintains a practice in Seattle where she focuses on lymphatic drainage, neuromuscular therapy, Polarity and Watsu. She treasures her time with family and “family of friends”. You can contact her with questions about Polarity Therapy training at k.bromley@earthlink.net.

SPOTLIGHT ON OSM AUTHORS

Oregon School of Massage is fortunate to have some of the area’s most talented and dedicated instructors. But did you know that a few of them are authors as well?

Marybetts Sinclair, LMT, who teaches Hydrotherapy, Pediatric Massage and the new, upcoming class Self Care for the Upper Extremities, has authored three books. Massage for Healthier Children introduces the reader to massage as a health care tool for children of all ages. With detailed illustrations, it is easy to follow, and includes sections on massage for common discomforts and massage for children with special needs.

Pediatric Massage Therapy is directed towards students and practitioners of massage therapy. It includes much of the valuable information from Massage for Healthier Children, but also incorporates hydrotherapy techniques, case studies, and guidance on how to work with children, their parents and their doctors. It is a must-have reference book for any bodyworker wanting to incorporate pediatric massage into their practice.

Modern Hydrotherapy for the Massage Therapist is Marybetts’s most recent book, and will be available this November. It offers clear explanations of how to incorporate hydrotherapy into massage, and demonstrates how specific treatments affect the body.

Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT, teaches Massage for People Living with Cancer and Hospital Massage – Oncology Rotation at OSM. She is the author of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer and Massage for the Hospital Patient and Medically Frail Client. Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer not only focuses on the importance of touch through all phases of cancer, but also includes special sections on massage for children with cancer and caring for the caregivers. It is an invaluable resource for anyone supporting cancer patients.

Massage for the Hospital Patient and Medically Frail Client provides a foundation for doing massage therapy in medical settings. It presents bodywork as a complementary therapy to traditional medical treatments, and covers various clinical considerations such as hospital culture, infection control practices and the relationship bodywork has to common medications, medical devices and medical procedures.

Frank Coppieters, PhD, who teaches Reiki Healing and Shamanism Today at OSM, has compiled a collection of inspired messages in a beautiful book entitled Handbook for the Evolving Heart. Sections such as Awareness and Awakening, Love and Light, and Meditation are just a few that offer spiritual guidance. Combined with mandalas by artist Simone d’Aubigné, Frank’s prayer/poems speak to anyone seeking love, peace and comfort.

Anne Williams, LMP, teaches Aromatic Body Stone and the series of spa classes at Oregon School of Massage. Her book, Spa Bodywork: A Guide for Massage Therapists, was published just this year. This is an in-depth guide for massage therapists wanting to offer their clients spa treatments in a dry-room setting. It includes full-color photographs, sample treatments, and step-by-step guidance on delivering various spa treatments.

In addition to books, we also offer two DVDs featuring OSM instructors. Molly Verschingel, BS, LMT leads over two hours of massage therapy techniques for athletes in Sports Massage. Thirteen sessions are presented on this DVD, and offer tools for working with runners, cyclists, swimmers and more. In addition to demonstrations, information on sport psychology, diet and setting up a massage station at a sporting event is also included.

Leslie Stager, RN, LMT is featured in Mastering Pregnancy Massage. In this three-hour DVD, Leslie guides viewers through hundreds of techniques to ease the discomforts of pregnancy. With both live action and detailed 3-D graphics, this DVD is a wonderful reference tool for any LMT.

Leslie is also completing her video Mother Touch - Nurturing Touch for Birth, as well as her book on pregnancy, labor and postpartum massage. We look forward to its appearance in the OSM bookstores in 2008.

OSM is proud to support our community members. We carry these books and DVDs in the bookstores, and encourage all students and staff to stop in and take a look.
