ABC's of Chinese Medicine - Part A

Part A is a step-by-step survey of traditional Chinese medicine. The course provides perspective on Chinese medical theory and practice. It presents the principles that form the foundation of the Eastern medical model and discusses traditional Chinese medicine from the standpoint of the following topics: Anatomy & Physiology, Pathology & Pathogenesis, Diagnosis & Treatment and, perhaps most importantly, the Philosophy & Cosmology behind them. A significant portion of the course focuses on the Chinese image of organ networks and their range of functions. (30 CEs)

ABC's of Chinese Medicine - Part B

Part A focuses on healthy function, while Part B explores the energetic workings of the body from the standpoint of disharmony or pathology. Specifically, we try to understand how and why both physical and psycho-emotional signs and symptoms arise and to view their manifestation as unique to individual organs. In Chinese medicine, disease is primarily identified by a constellation of symptoms known as an organ pattern. Note: This is the only class which does not apply to OSM's Washington Certificate Program. Prerequisites: ABC's of Chinese Medicine - Part A (30 CEs)

Jim Cleaver, L.Ac.

ABC's of Chinese Medicine - Part C (Point Location)

We will focus on the anatomical location of each point and learn the most significant clinical categories associated with them. In addition, students will be introduced to the names by which points are identified in China, as well as a translation and medical meaning of the most important points. Prerequisites: Shiatsu I or ABCs - Part A or Eastern Review (30 CEs)

Pediatric Massage

Many massage practitioners who are comfortable massaging adults would also like to attain that same level of comfort with children. This class enables them to do just that: by making massage fun and relaxing for children, they learn early that the massage therapist is their friend! We discuss the growth and development of children, how childhood events such as birth and injuries can affect the child's body, and how these events can initiate musculoskeletal pain and restriction later in life. Students then learn how to engage and hold children's interest during massage sessions, how to perform a basic pediatric massage routine and then how to tailor it to individual children. Pediatric Massage Therapy by Marybetts Sinclair is the required text for this class, and students will use it during class and later as a resource for massaging children who are stressed, injured, have a variety of aches and pains, or have disabilities. Students should bring one or more children ages 3-12 to class on both Saturday and Sunday from 2-4pm. However, they do not have to be the same children both afternoons. Shiatsu Barefoot Massage

Barefoot Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese approach to bodywork utilizing the feet to press, stretch and stroke the body in what is a surprisingly comfortable and satisfying massage experience. It is also fun to do. Barefoot technique develops a strong sense of balance, body awareness and sensitivity similar to practicing Tai Ji Quan. The barefoot style was first promoted in this country by Shizuko Yamamoto, and is part of the tradition in which Jim Cleaver originally trained. This technique is especially useful when the client is larger than the practitioner. This class is open to anyone and, like Shiatsu Basics, is a good introduction to Shiatsu. (15 CEs)

Tai-Ji Quan

This class presents the first section of the long form Yang style Tai-Ji Quan. Therapeutic Stretching for the Lower Body

Muscle energy techniques (MET) have been called "active muscular relaxation techniques" and give us gentle, yet powerful tools for working with clients with injuries and musculoskeletal dysfunction. METs are particularly effective with clients who have pain from injuries such as whiplash or severe muscle spasm, limitations such as frozen shoulder, or for resolving even chronic trigger points. They can also be used with older clients who may have restricted mobility from arthritis. This class will cover basic postural and range of motion assessment, MET techniques for the lower body and integration with massage techniques. Recommended text: Facilitated Stretching by Robert McAtee. Prerequisite: Kinesiology - Lower Body (7.5 CEs - NCBTMB Approved)

They can also be used with older clients who may have restricted mobility from arthritis. Universal Reflexology

The purpose of this class is to give students a basic understanding of the Universal approach to reflexology. It is based on the belief that stored emotional energy in the body can be the cause of illness and imbalance and is structured around the chakra energy centers. Students are introduced to how our emotional lives are reflected on the feet and then taken through a step-by-step sequence designed to release this stored energy from the tissues. Classroom time consists of some lecture/discussion followed by demonstration and hands-on application by the students. (7.5 CEs- NCBTMB Approved)

Upper Extremity Toolbox

The upper extremity is essential in how we express ourselves and carry out much of our work. In this workshop we will focus on aligning the client's shoulder, arm and forearm to help eliminate soft tissue strains caused by uneven forces and misaligned joints. With lecture, demonstration and practice we'll integrate energy work, fascial release, neuromuscular trigger point therapy and stretching to release tension from the scapula through the hand. These tools will help balance the area to improve movement, increase breathing capacity and reduce risk of injury. The class is geared to those new to the techniques or with some experience. The books, The Balanced Body, and Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction, will provide background information for the treatments. Prerequisite: Massage - Upper Body (may be concurrent) or instructor approval (7.5 CEs)
